4. Acclimate your pet for the road trip. If you're traveling by car, and your dog enjoys car travel, you may want to accustom him to a restraining harness. Because most cats aren't comfortable traveling in cars, it's best to transport them in a well-ventilated and securely placed carrier. Never leave pets alone in a parked vehicle during warm weather because the temperature rises quickly and can injure or kill them. It is also a good idea to bring along your pet's favorite toy; something familiar for the long trip.
5. Talk to your veterinarian. Be sure to have an up to date copy of your pet's shot records and vaccinations in case you need to show them at a hotel or kennel along the way. If your pet doesn't enjoy car rides, talk to your veterinarian about behavior modification or medication that might lessen the stress of travel.
6. Prepare your new place. Take with you all the familiar and necessary things your pet will need from day one in your new home: Food, water, medications, bed, litter box, food and water bowls, and health records. Also have on hand a recent photo of your pet for use if your pet becomes lost. Find a dog park, local veterinarians and pet resources in your new hometown to get started adjusting your pet to his new home.
8. Take time and allow your pet to adjust to his new surroundings, people and places. As long as he has love from his owner, he will feel secure and adjust to his new environment.
